Spotting was boring. It was great to get off the base and visit a few of the local towns and actually see America, but spotting was incredibly dull. I had hoped that Aaron, my Section Leader, would assign me to watching pre awakened kids for signs of awakening, but because my own experience had been atypical, he decided that wouldn't be appropriate. I was disappointed about that because I felt sure I would have done a much better job than the people who had been watching me all those years.
Instead, a few of us would roll up at a busy outlet mall and hang out, eating pizza, trying cosmetics and perfumes, browsing through CDs or books or clothes. Basically doing whatever kids did. I know, that all sounds fun, but while I did slightly extend my wardrobe and hugely extend my book collection, after a while, it was boring.
It was a cold March day on what felt like my fiftieth trip out, led by Aaron, with Vicky, Jenny and Sarah who were all a year or so younger than me. I slid off, mid-shift, to use the bathroom. As I walked in, I blinked in and found myself in the middle of a yellow mist aiming towards a stall with an Out-Of-Order sign on the door. It was all I could do not to scream and run.
As naturally as possible, I entered the closest stall. I stayed blinked in on the toilet while I watched the yellow haze around the cubical until it disappeared. Flushing and walking out of the cubicle, I stayed in the bathroom, brushing my hair. A couple of minutes later, an attractive young woman walked out of the cubicle and started freshening her makeup.
As I washed my hands, I smiled at her in the mirror while she put on her lipstick and she smiled back. As usual, the real world had turned a hazy monochrome, and in human form, the woman looked no different to anyone else. I blinked back out, and she was still staring at me in the mirror, but her expression had changed. I realised that the smile had frozen on my face.
I faked the most shallow-sounding accent I could muster and said, "Nice colour." My heart hammered as I walked past her to the hand dryer. I stood with my back to her, drying my hands, expecting to be attacked from behind and trying to remember my self-defence moves.
I walked out of the bathroom without a backward glance, rejoined the team and tried to look like I wasn't completely freaked. I picked up a magazine and flicked through it casually as I told them about the woman. One of the girls took the magazine from my hands as it was rustling so loudly, they couldn't hear me correctly.
Aaron texted the backup team. I had to stop watching the door of the ladies" room, waiting for her to emerge, but I kept it in my peripheral view. The backup team arrived and ordered us back to the vehicle.
